Reports have merged that iconic video game brand Sega is close to launching a Netflix-like subscription service for video games. This would represent an iconic shift in how video games are currently sold to the consumer, and would represent a groundbreaking move ahead of the curve.
The only similar services in the market are ones owned by the video game console titans Microsoft and Sony, and these services involve gamers paying a monthly fee for access to a range of titles rather the ongoing right to own them outright.
Sega’s president Shuji Utsumi has confirmed with at least one international news organization that he is “evaluating some opportunities”.
“We’re thinking something – and discussing something – we cannot disclose right now,” he said.
Traditionalists may be against the move, but it is no doubt the way of the future as it appears right now.
