What is Bluesky, and should X be concerned?

What is Bluesky?

Blueskey is a social media app that describes itself as “social media as it should be”.

Users of the Bluesky platform can post, comment, repost express their interest in their own way.

It doesn’t break much ground, in that it looks similar to what X or Twitter used to look like pre Musk.

The main difference is that Bluesky users can host their data on servers other than those owned by the company. But it appears that despite this capability, the vast majority of users don’t host their own data, and a new user will most likely have a name that incorporates “.bsky.social”.

So Should Elon Musk be concerned about bluesky?
Bluesky looks like twitter used to mainly because the former head of Twitter, Jack Dorsey, is the one who created it. But he is no longer part of the team behind it, having retired in May 2024.

It is now run and owned by chief executive Jay Graber, the daughter of a Chinese mother who worked as an acupuncturist and a Swiss father who taught mathematics.

It’s use has been increasing, but it is no threat to X at the present time, except that it is a refuge for voters who blame Musk for Donald Trump’s recent crushing victory in the US presidential elections.
