Meta has been accused by the US regulator the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) of not putting proper parental controls in place for users of Facebook and Instagram, and for recklessly making money from data created by under-age children.
“The company’s recklessness has put young users at risk”
The FTC said users aged under 13 were found to engage in chats with contacts not vetted by parents.
The FTC has proposed a series of actions, including:
- A prohibition against monetising data of children under 18
- A pause on the launch of new products by meta unless they can establish full compliance with privacy rules
