Following on the subscription model of Twitter, it has been announced that an advertising free version of Facebook and Instagram will be available for users in europe if they pay for a subscription.
Facebook and Instagram users in Europe will need to pay €9.99 per month to avoid advertising.
Elon Musk’s X, previously known as Twitter, was first to introduce an advertising free service priced at £16 monthly.
Although it appears that Zuckerberg is stealing Musk’s model, and applying it to Meta, there is at least one plausible reason why it has emerged.
Their decision follows a European court case where Meta was fined after breaching data rules in Europe that relate to advertising.
Only users in the European Union, the European Economic Area and Switzerland will have access to the subscription which will open up later in November 2023.
There are no immediate plans to offer subscriptions worldwide.
