The Canadian government has announced there will be a 100% tariff imposed upon Chinese manufactured electric vehicle imports.
This announcement comes shortly after similar announcements that tariffs will apply to steel and aluminum.
The tarrifs are in response to allegations that China has provided its car manufacturing industry with unfair subsidies. China of course has suggested that this move violates World Trade Organization rules, and is an example of trade protectionism.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has been quoted as saying “actors like China have chosen to give themselves an unfair advantage in the global marketplace”.
The tariffs will apply from October.
